PRETTY VIEW
series of digital photographs, 2024
This series of photos are about the passage of time and the passing of life. I present this series, not to elicit sympathy, but to offer a candid exploration of fleeting beauty and quiet contemplation. Understanding death as part of eternal time helps me accept mortality and embrace the present more fully.

Growing up, the city skyline acted as a beacon, particularly during family trips where spotting Winnipeg first became a cherished game. So from a young age my eye sought out those tall buildings, far across the prairie horizon, jutting up into an endless sky.

Taken without the intention of creating art, these photos of the Winnipeg skyline at various moments over the course of two months were captured on a camera phone from a loved one’s hospital room window. They were initially born from a spontaneous response to the scenery that I found before me.  Moved by the ethereal quality of the light and the shifting
hues of the sky, I felt compelled to capture these moments. After some thought, I began to see of them as a personal testament to the fleeting nature of beauty and existence.

As I found myself reflecting on the profound implications of death and time, the significance of these spontaneous photographs deepened. Contemplating the nature of existence led me to reconsider this series, revealing the dynamic relationship between the uninterrupted flow of time and the ever-changing nature of the universe. Each photograph became a window into the eternal now.

The theory of relativity offers hypothetical evidence for the idea that time is not a linear progression but a unified whole where past, present, and future coexist. And I find it comforting to imagine death isn't an endpoint but a transition within this eternal now.

I present Pretty View not merely as visual documentation of a single location; but as a meditation on the fragility and beauty of existence. Marking the passage of time, each image serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of mortality. I invite the viewer to embrace the present moment and find solace in the passing beauty that surrounds us.
